Over the last 6 months we've been doing transcontinental research primarily
between USA, Europe and India

Imagine you are the centre of a noughts and crosses, what other 8 change the
world networks would you like to have gateway ambassadors to within your
social network and close connections. The research mainly connects India ,
Europe and USA.

The map we come up with is attached

Please note there were other answers but I'm trying to summarise 9; I do love
to know what is completely missing ; I am aware china is

Many of the labels may seem weird; when I look at world social forum I see
open space circles and reconciliation methods too; I also see attempts to
bridge the greatest responsibilities of those with leadership power to
compound future sustainability not just of eg their corporation but the global
market sector they are in (and eg one such sector is national government). One
idea to say through many different but collaborative local chapters AND to
all major corporations NOW is the mother of all global quality system
benchmarking; join in or stay out but by 2015 those in will be valued far the
most because they will have humanised their business case to include
sustainability of nature and millennial goals

To try and help translate labels I will be developing
http://humanityrising.blogspot.com whose sidebar is full of some video samples
with people like Gore or Microfinance's Yunus or World Social Forum,'s Grajew-
or Bill Drayton who has spent 30 years connecting a databank of 2000 socila
entrepreneurs, or one of the greatest (unknow to many) of all Fazle Abed of
Brac. It will be about 48 hours before most of the links are programmed.

The Cooperation Update: In the Summer of Inconvenient Truth 2006

Membership of The Cooperation is simple. You must convince at least some existing members that you passionately believe you are on a cooperative mission which is on a 5 year deadline for sustaining humanity. After that globalisation's conflict consequences will be exponentially irreversible

Q&A
Where Does The Cooperation meet?
Potentially wherever 2 people on a sustainability mission host a collaboration cafe. After 2 years of hosting these: London as the number 1 ranked knowledge collaboration city connecting these 40+ million bookmarks was ready for its 25 people inaugural open space debate of TheCooperation

Who tries to Keep invitations to The Cooperation flowing
Timeless web-log networks including club of city, village, country; frapps of Inconvenient Truth, Media Revolution (please become part of the inuagural network of 2000 people to free the governors of the BBC for world service), Project30000 and Make Poverty History etc - tell chris.macrae@yahoo.co.uk if you have a co-mediating idea

Where do The Cooperation alumni dream of meeting next (or at least ensuring enough delegates to keep meta-network connections for sustainability compounding up by 2012)
  • Nashville 2006 -where Al Gore is training 1000 people to present Inconvenient Truth 1 Slides

  • Kenya 2007 - World Social Forum 1 for Africa

  • Ahmedabad 2007 - Gandhi networkers centenary hosted in his Ashram
(tell chris.macrae@yahoo.co.uk if there's an event of equivalent grassroots depth where entry is primarily qualified by how passionate you are for networking sustainability not money or any other discrimantory criteria)

    Previously

We invite netizens 1 2 to nominate the hub they trust most for cooperation in project30000: and particularly where all the city's sustainability investment networks interconnect through people concerned with linking in 2 great web priorities of 2006-2007:
  • clean water & energy: 1 2 ...

  • web 2.1 (economics of learning nets; future scenarios worth debating up from every hub) -what the net can always enable peoples to learn and multiply if we can co-mentor each other andopenly map relationship separations down to zero degrees on news of inventions the world's 6 billion being need to be most productive on

Order of magnitude Model for Global Economy in a networked world of goodwill

64 Trillion =Public Cooperations (eg education, health, loving cross-cultural divesrity of societies, vibrant access to public media (broadcast * networked * community spaces) at every locality, open source 30000 projects, safety, licensing the hippocratic oaths of professions, advancing universal civilisation around basic human rights including system*system transparencies and openly educating 6 billion beings in nature's web, heroising deep voices for global sustainability exponentials ...)*Corporation*Individual Decision-Making*regulation
    Index at
    4*4*4*1 Trillion

what this model shows is the multiplicative connections are vital; if any of the 4 components go on a downward exponential to zero, the whole world's sustainability of value exchanges collapses

valuetrue can help you link together more detailed contextual maps of any othe 4 components

The Cooperation across every city has 2 key roles:
to be mapmaker in chief for Public Cooperations and where futures are happening that peoples most urgently need starting with those that make extreme poverty history and proactively sfaeguard people from getting trapped in life-threatening situations; and to help with grading all governance systems according to transparency's traffic lights

    the peoples economics

It is not the job of democracy to sponsor 95% of academic economists to study how the big gets bigger (globalisation) or the short-term gets shorter

Alumni of the peoples economics side with the founder of The Economist who set the next 2 future goals - in the 1800s "repeal the corn laws" being the main one out of Britain, still not accomplished when you look at the humanitarianly dreadful aggricultiral policy of the European Union- an identity that has lost allo relationship with its onw founder's purpose of untite countries in transparent and just trade so that there will be no more wars; others who support parallel economic threads include all of the 20th century's primary mathematicians - see von neumann's valuation of open source collaboration or Einstein's support of Gandhian economics (truth testing, community-up contextual transparency of systems, empowering people to make a difference around what they feel most passionate about and spend their most time on nurturing)

Entrepreneurial Revolution is now its 30th year of hosting future scripts dialogues so that societies can debate what assets they must next take back into open use, and how to do this fairly

in moving to the service economy, we need to take back people's working lives from those Big 5 (now 4) tangible global accountants and others whose standard assumptions monopolise attention to investing in machines (never people) and are driven by spreadsheeting numbers than true innovation exponentials; we need to take back media from dumbing us down especially for 2 reasons : the advent of the learning network, and the ruinous costs of global brands based on billion a dollars a year of image-making ads and no money for reality-making; we need to restore 21 global markets so that their visions are pro-humanity instead of externalising the sector's biggest risk onto whatever society is most disconnected from knowing what's happening; we need to value nature and other common goods so that everyone can have clean water and that we transform to photosynthetic energy before carbon darkens the world or upsets natures waves or becomes too expensive in other ways to sustain all peoples

above all it is healthy (deeply diverse) societies that sustain stsrong economies not vice versa; if any economist does not know that, put him out to grass, he's no use as a mathematician of how value truly multiplies over a generation and certainly no use as an adviser to true leaders of the 21st century and the people's hi-trust connecting world

    Sunday, December 31, 2006

Since 1984, we've been keeping track of Schumacher's view that to sustain a 21st C world, 4 billion of us would need to win-win for 2 million villages. NB both bottom of pyramid researcher around CK Prahalad and 100 country habitatjams on city slums confirm what those from Gandhi on have communicated - the world's extreme poor are as entrepreneurial, innovative willing to make a difference as the rest of us; its just warring or other rotting systems have been exponentially turned against them over generations. Of many lessons, we note that integrating 2 billion people into the productive and demanding connections the rest of us develop can only make for more prosperity for all, whereas barring them from connecting would be the most terrible compound mistake we could make whether you judge this from a logical lens of god, hiumanity or nature.

However mapping (say) 1 million rural vilages of which there are inspiring qyuarter a centiry benchmarks like visa is not enough. Those of us in well-off cities need to start mapping villages we can network round to multiply change in ways that ensures humanity does not turn on itself. Since 7/7, Londoners have redoubled our efforts to connect maps with Club of Pakistan ; our Queen Elizabeth has used her end of 2005 message to ask all who feel they bleong to a Commonwealth to ask how to stop humanity turning on istelf; the deepest meetings calendar of London in 2006 is ready and waiting for you to linkin agendas; and as we resolve the foci of London by villages, this first cluster of 5 could have parallel lessons for any knowledge collaboration city.

our second annual london hosting of The Cooperation will likely talke place next week

as in 2005, its free but dont come unless you believe there is a world chnage crisis that must be turned round in the next 5 years and are happy to share all network details you connect through in being that world change

we will discuss how this is likely the last micro version of the cooeration

2007 events will be held where and when 1000 people want to meet to change each other in world chnage guides materials

we have various .tv web affiliates signed up to The Cooperation including
worldcitizen.tv grameen.tv oxbridge.tv sqtest.tv -for example oxbridge.tv is a conveneint place to register world chnage league tables as Oxford is the UK's hub to the world championships for social entrepreneur. Strangely the only world entrepreneur congress as yet represented in UK annual events. Given that Scottish editors kept the systemic entrpreneurial revolution flying for the first 188 years of this mapmaking methodolgy, it is time The Cooperation struck back, let alone ensured that the english lanaguse uses the word entrepreneur corectly something that does not happen in the catholic school system my 9 year old attends!

then there's the wee matter of signing the pledge to the take back the BBC for the peoples

we have various world handbooks and local mix and match formats going to the presses

I gather that Traci of www.worldblu.com is doing a short European tour that may include London in the next 10 days.

She is epicentral to a movement she calls organsiational democracy but which is also close to the heart of anyone who believes that the service economy changed productivity' locus from machine capital to investing in people that make a difference

When Traci hosted a 4-day and 200 string meeting last October- we heard how SW Airlines returned 100 fold to investors over a generation but only by supporting its service teams and multiplying even more value to societies that would have been in quite a cut off part of the states if it had not made travel cheerful and cheap

we heard from the founder of fast company magazine that the secret to turning what finaciers might think is a grotty (low returns) sector into one that multiplies value over time is always enable your staff to work with those customers who can see the biggest societal meaning of your sector

we heard from the guy who is CEO of GE's aircracft engine facility how his only job inside the facility is to support team work and is his other job is to stop the top from interfering

As this is also the 30th year since enterpreneurial revolution was published in The Economist, I have taken the opportunity to link together what preneurs have tended to believe economics does - multiply value for all people who deeply engage around purpose - not just for the big gets bigger; and why loking at the web as the greatest revolution to hit one generation's productivity all round the world, the expoential consequences of gaining or losing transparency of economics were always closely linked to whether we sustain future generations. Its ironical that the 19th century founder of The Economist was one of the original social entrepreneurs when you look how popular this is becoming at Oxford Said Business school - see http://clubofoxford.blogspot.com - who has Al Gore over at the end of March where his other session is with members of www.tomorrowscompany.com
the short write up and link up of this is currently at http://openspaceraces.blogspot.com; we are always looking to see how our library of scripts can openly support preneurial take back of the people's assets or laws that have gone past their sell-by date; Londoners have particularly world-critical space races going on this year in terms of freeing up the bbc for the world service and changing professions so they start connecting instead of hyper-separating

ps I will be in London for the first time this year with some free diary spaces wednesday march1 through Friday march 3- get in touch if you'd like a coffee or can see some ways to colaborate , chris wcbnoo7@easynet.co.uk

ropund the world discussion on why cities need collaboration hubs for social preneurs

This is a post first written for the February 06 Townhall of Omidyar and refering to Catcomm in Rio, Club of Brazil that a few Londoners helped to pledge for as well as assist through the idea of pledgebank which we co-created at the concept stage over here. Brazil is also a collaboration guide-link in the 80 around the world tour of cultures sponsored by Club of City and London's cross-cultural responsibilities for world service and Web2.1

Let me take "the city has project hubs" attribute because in London http://thecooperation.blogspot.com we have some learnings on this that apply to omidyar's supporting investment of a hub http://www.catcomm.org in Rio, Brazil as well as many of us who pledged as individual angels

I know there is a problem with language and context but I will use the word cultural creative to typically mean people of the net generation (say under 30ish) who link community-up networks across a city -they want to co-create a better world through their lifetime and ultimately the open leaders of their generation. Suppose we identified the most connected 20 or 100 cultural creatives in London. Most of them know where London's number 1 hub is, they demand its openness as a cooperation epicentre and this makes it able to catalogue all emerging projects (both home grown at that hub and away).

I am unclear whether the same dynamic is happening yet in Rio in spite of all Theresa's tireless work to nurture for all involved. I realise that may be because the 100 people most concerned for community up project collaboration in Rio may not all be online or even net-generation in profiles. However Catcomm does have some advantages that the emrgence of London hubs does not - eg 200 individual pledgers - have we made sure that all the people we know in Rio who might connect round Theresa know of her and Catcomm? Indeed as friends of catcomm, do we have some way of exchanging ideas with each other. How well interconnecting are we in making this resonate as a hub in every way?
I believe it is necessary to ask such detailed questions to also find out where different contextual blocks are. For example in London, it is horrifying but true to say that the work of cultural creatives is usually blocked both by local government and by traditional charities. Learning if this is the case (and why!) in a particular place is a key to understanding what microfinance can do that no other mechanism can.
I hope this illustrates ( a wee bit) why this attribute is quite important to clarify as we consider how to openly and sustainably help needy peoples in one place and another.
Incidentally, if anyone could tell me where the hub of Washington Dc or Bethesda is -phew that would save us reinventing so many wheels that the people need to connect with America's 2 big new space races if they are to open out instead of being just a top person's game http://clubofbethesda.blogspot.com If only medecins sans frontiere had a branch in Bethesda then we could start connecting open medical networks such as those revolving round Melbourne's http://www.globalreconciliationnetwork.org and all its links with deep hubs across India ...

Pakistan is playing its first co-hosting role of the World Social Forum movement in 2006
    Hi

1 I hope that an open critical mass of http://thecooperation.blogspot.com/ gets to Tav's debriefing to represent the network grid connections all over London which we talked about (sorry the old clubofcopp blogspot got melted down by Google along with 100 other colaboration blogs around Dec 10 - a catchup nightmare for me which makes plex or peoplesworld or one of tehse interfaces ever more vital to sustain -Google seems not to understand transparency mapping at all this last quarter- perhaps dealing with aol/time warner took the top duos eye of the do no evil ball). By an open critical mass: I mean enough people to discuss back with this circulation list what they discovered about plex and espians

2 If anyone is or becomes a member of http://www.omidyar.net/ - could you tell me. I believe this is currently the most microfinanced community to develop peoples economics and fair world trade between 2 million global villages as per our 1984 open dialogue script

Equally we are running out of timeline at http://project30000.blogspot.com/ attempt to help Queen Elizabeth's search for an antidote to humanity turning on itself, so if you know what virtual community we should loosely connect through beyond omidyar.net, please say

3 the rest of this mail I wrote for someone else, but I believe it may have some relevant connections (ask me for more if you and yours see one whsoe dynamics you need to be in there spinning)cheers, chris macraeif you know an open space that is more productive to be in to sustain 2 million global vilages, let's hear of it. I cant afford to waste my time playing in communities that don't get the urgency of http://project30000.blogspot.com/ - 5 years left!

4 we've started a survey of networks or their coordinators - on you project oscars for 2000-2005- do you have a top 10 or 5 nominations of open projects for humanity that are still sustaining from this first 5-year of worldwide connectivity? no prizes; and the process of how people classify projects and how to connect all the listings interests me more than the stage which such an oscar process can revolve..your nominations, or views on how to keep building peoplesoscars welcome!

Chris Macrae writing from DC here (where I mostly am due to ill family which is stopping me from connecting a lot of the best of Loncon) http://clubofvillage.blogspot.com/ according to the 30 year entrepreneurial revolution of openly networking economics around 2 million global villages
I like the look of http://www.commonspace.com/ a lot - would you have time to occasionaly co-edit http://openspaceraces.blogspot.com/ bringing the view of commonspace to the causes
Are you aware of the silicon valley open space city to city movement that calls itself brainjams.com and web2.1. I met this open movement's leaders in Dc 2 weeks ago and have started an email discussion circulation around them - say if you want to join in
I noticed your blogs refer to Lee Bryant/Headshift presentation of bottom up KM; I have been a fan of headshift since its inception; indeed valuetrue.com was designed by Bryany, Livio and co-workers. Do you have a copy of the bottom-up Km or any bookmarks I should be viewing to update myself and those that connect around macrae.nets. Its funny that 21 of bush's network just rediscovered the catchpharse that my dad and I popularise 22 years ago withoutr book on the gtreatest challenge ever to hit a generation - ours of 1984-2024 http://deathofdistance.blogspot.com/ http://clubofbethesda.blogspot.com/ http://ecosaintjames.blogspot.com/ http://futureoflondon.blogspot.com/ all peoples timeless blogs loosely connected (pity the John Moore type of blogger doesnt get that waving the collaboration cafe conections matter more than the separate authenticities?)
Gee, isn't the lack of simple mapping knowledge about whole systems scary http://valuesystem.blogspot.com/ I'm starting an omidyar thread on how professions are set to destroy humanity unless we can find ways of profiting from connecting business cases not separation ones -mail me if you need the file on how to repleay that conversation game anywhere else

Dear Chris et al., I am pleased to see this community around the Cooperation being nurtured. We (espians) are doing a small "Vision of Espia" @ the Hub, Angel, which you all might be interested in. During it we shall do a presentation: * Showing off the trust/reputation based collaborative technology platform that we've developed (Protoplex). * Give a brief overview of differing circumstances to which this can be successfully applied -- communication, governance, media, education, campaigning, ethics, trade, entertainment, &c. Afterwards, we'd like to have an open discussion -- especially about how this can tie together with the work that others are doing. The event will be @ the Hub, Angel from 6pm - 8:30pm on Friday, February 24th. http://www.the-hub.net/where/ You are all invited to come along if you happen to be around -- to listen, to chat, to drink some wine -- before heading off to your Friday night adventures. -- Warm regards, tav

a question to the 21st C: will those on top of the world leave the peoples to suffer through all the troubles?

The death of distance future history we wrote in 1984 (the final book of a trilogy whose first 2 episodes were published as surveys in The Economist 1976 1982 ) predicted the next decade would revolve round reconciling this risk. In a networked age the people at the top are not as smart as connecting what we could all observe, question, collectively knowledge work around.

If this decade 2000-2010 fails in this globalisation reconciliation, 1 we will have failed our children's generation and started mankind's destruction of the earth. Call that the George Orwell scenario or which ever scifi apocalypse tomorrow you have had the closets encounter with. If however we succeed in mapping a way through so that the top listen to the people and use media to ask the next big questions rather than to image over reality, then we forecast that the 21st C will be the age when humankind finally grows up in the greatest collaboration and civilisation imaginable.

    OUR MISSIONS at MACRAE.NETS

WE will keep circulating our scripts on Death of Distance and Entrepreneurial Revolution for Open Debate wherever people sources linkin or netizens co-blog A B C D

We will develop a website valuetrue.com where all transparency communities are invited to map out hi-trust relationships and transparencies between the boundaries of one place and another, or one competitive corporation and another, or one management profession and another. We will update any trouble stories that appear in the hope that out of conflicts pattern rules higher order harmony can be facilitated. This reflects the number 1 learning about innovation and peace of open space in its first 50000 rehearsals that Harrison Owen's worldwide alumni began about the same time as we started issuing earth of distance debating scripts. May all your good's love unite around large scale people meetings wherever the souls and spirits are trying their best to love one another.

August 05 - Sarajevo's story from Paul -Thank you. I have been here for three days. It is one of the most intense places I have ever been. Sarajevo is itself exquisitely beautiful, with architecture dating from the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires while at the same time everywhere the scars of war are evident. Also, everyone has a story of pain. Together, it is almost too much to bear. The task of reconciliation is certainly a massive one!

    Appreciating other's places

How we announced MyWorldAtlas to The Open Space Community whose shared listserve is as inquisitive for humanity's sake as any yet known to valuetrue transparency communities and ASIN emerging at BBCican.

I have been piloting this systemic construct's components for quite a long while now, and feel confident enough to expose it to your advice. Doubtless it needs huge improvement. I have long believed an open networking world needs a whole new atlas to take economics above zero-sum extraction - our dream journey begins at global university with helping people to develop a different map for every humanitarian agenda that replicates globally but requires active resolution locally.

Oddly, as I begin to network professionally with sustainabilty investment analysts - defined to be those whose prime concern is mathematically quantifying future exponentials - I believe that service and knowledge community businesses could learn from this paradigm too. See through maps of how key relationships of productivities and demands win-win-win make a company's most attractive (unique founding) purpose sustainable if it a company is prepared to make its reputation an open gateway to better futures for as many people as possible (an old fashion view of why people commit working lives to organisation). This seems to be acutely true in transformation contexts needing appreciation of Harrison's Triple-C : Conflict-Chaos-Confusion template for reconciliation.

The first component of MyWorldAtlas is literally to issue an invitation to a person or people in a network who appear to have a common gravity that I would hope to mutually multiply trust around.

In issuing such invitations, its often unclear who needs to co-mentor who first- that is part of the exploration permit or open space dialogue. I am sure, since Open Spaces are the greatest invitation gatherings around, you could edit a better invitation but the one our (1) MyWorldAtlas network uses currently is approximately this

Typical Co-Navigation Opening Offer Between Deep Context MyWorldAtlas Cartographers

The more I read of your ideas and concerns , the more I would like to work as virtual partners on a deep joint project

By a deep issue context I mean: any one that you will be passionate about over the next 7 years and need some joint open searching, linking, promotion, facilitation, action project prooftesting and global replication. I don't particularly mind whether a nomination is commercial or wholly humanitarian as long as it does not close off collaborative learnings and transparency work I try to do with many others and other networks.

The bigger the challenge the better as long as you know some of your time/passion will compound around its action learning curve. I have been piloting a rough idea which I call MyWorldAtlas that I can illustrate better to show how to iteratively connect around a context, but I would need to hear or rehearse with you what the deepest context you are interested in from where you observe and experience life and sustainable value development. One reason why big actually helps me is that I mail coordinators of powerful networks with expressions of interest of people I link with giving them a menu which test out whether their network is actually up for action. One example of a target I want to test over the next 6 weeks is (3) clintonglobalinitiative.com - I get to hear of a new one of these almost monthly, and whilst I expect 11 out of 12 won't listen, (4) At Interlocal I later publish the gist of the letters I wrote and so discover who is prepared to work all the way with the people everyplace and who is just in a summit world of their own kind

Can we simultaneously learn from New Orleans, 77/7, Tsunami, 9/11...? We profile New Orleans here because it may have the most learning loops all the way down from superpower to communities whose fragility may be cause by nature's extremities on man's more selfish divides compounded over many periods of government. In most situations, we have local disaster clubs continuing action learning and regeneration from their epicentre of crisis- ask wcbn007@easynet.co.uk if you want or can help guiding transparent learning from these situations. Exploring New Orleans Future : Doublequotes is full of tense clues

Sep 16, 2005 — President Bush said Friday that the Gulf Coast must be rebuilt with an eye toward wiping out the persistent poverty and racial injustice plain to all in the suffering of the black and the poor in Hurricane Katrina's wake.

"As we clear away the debris of a hurricane, let us also clear away the legacy of inequality," Bush said during a national prayer service with other political leaders and religious figures from the affected region at the National Cathedral."

Also Friday, White House officials said that taxpayers will pay the bill for the massive reconstruction program for the hurricane ravaged-Gulf Coast and that the huge expense will worsen the nation's budget deficit.

Before Bush's remarks, Bishop T.D. Jakes, head of 30,000-member Potter's House church in Dallas, delivered a powerful sermon in which he called upon Americans to "dare to discuss the unmentionable issues that confront us" and to not rest until the poor are raised to an acceptable living standard.

"Katrina, perhaps, she has done something to this nation that needed to be done," Jakes said. "We can no longer be a nation that overlooks the poor and the suffering, that continues past the ghetto on our way to the Mardi Gras."

Bush, faced with continuing questions about whether help would have been sent more quickly to the storm zone if most victims had not been poor and black, echoed those themes in his brief remarks.

"Some of the greatest hardships fell upon citizens already facing lives of struggle, the elderly, the vulnerable and the poor," he said. The Washington Post of Sept 11 carried a complete calendar of breakdowns between all major organisations in the first 2 weeks of Katrina's disaster. Even more clearly than the tragedy 4 years earlier, this shows how the prosperity of human beings everywhere is declining unless we can learn to value transparency as the new vital dynamic of our networked globe and communities everywhere.

    valuationUSA
What if we explore governing America transparently: as a network of states where people's cultures flourish- we feel that a more human way can be found of sustaining states like Louisiana and cities like New Orleans than today's short-term power-brokering. We have a dream perhaps, but backed up by networking economics we began work on in 1984 that cherishes community-up transparency and enabling people to make a difference and seeks to resolve conflicts of sustainability systemically ahead of time. In our networked worlds and interlinking economies & societies 1 2 3 4 5, over-reliance on one system’s command and controls is every being’s greatest risk.

What do New York, New Orleans, Phuket Island, London, Baghdad & Various African States have in common? Were they one-offs or will their compound root causes recur in other cities (or geographically people-tied places)?

Quite simply, we can see that all these geographies of citizen networks (aka societies) were devastated by terrifying acts of man or nature. Some unprepared for a single destructive stroke, many degraded by compounding distrust or short-term monetisation.

Analyse these system crises more deeply for common patterns - and warn yourself by asking would you want your family's future to rely solely on 20th C -pre-networked, pre-global&local - ideologies like these:
  • National governance – much more local contextual resilience is needed

Nightline, ABC Sept 1: To hear federal & local authorities discuss the plight of New Orleans today is to know that one is seriously out of touch or incapable of confronting the truth

  • Left versus right short-term constitutions of voting and mass media soundbiting – investment decisions that truly could have saved or ameliorated situations were long-term, structural ; not just about money but deeper human relations investments such as trust in human cooperation, open spaces and learning curves of social capital, cultural harmony and trust as money.
  • Valuing global corporations' future impacts separately from local societies- any state that perpetuates this governance error will depressingly make globalisation less & less human

  • Blocking Interlocal exchanges of learning across networks that go beyond national or other geographical boundaries- for example, as human beings are composed mainly of water, we should demand education about whole system learnings to do with water and climate ecologies. Make sure these go beyond nations and other geographical boundaries-indeed when a network of systems times systems sustains the overall value or health being compounded over time, boundary separation is like any other apartheid the area of greatest human risk.
  • Ignoring nature's cultural order: healthy society is a necessary condition for compounding strong economic growth and sustaining learning cultures, not vice versa

New Orleans: Anarchy hits US storm relief
    ==============================

The news out of New Orleans is getting harder to believe every hour. The world's only superpower seems to have lost control of the situation. Thousands of people are still stranded without food, water or medicine. Tens of thousands more homeless.

Lawlessness is spreading around the city with police and national guard trying to control things but ambulances and rescue helicopters have been shot at by armed thugs. Those stranded at centres like the sports stadium are in appalling conditions with grim sanitation and supplies. There are attempts to get a few thousand people a day out of the city as the Mayor has ordered the forced evacuation of everyone, but it is pitifully slow and the people have little or nothing to go to. As for the bodies - there is still no reliable estimate of those dead. But now the Mayor and a senator have put it in the thousands.

People are starting to ask whether or not the warning and evacuation was mishandled. If people are being forced to leave now then why not at the weekend before Katrina struck? And there are increasing voices emerging about the warnings that were ignored.

Federal funds were denied to strengthen the levees. Was America so obsessed with fighting terror that it forgot what homeland security really means? And does the demographic breakdown of those worst hit - predominantly poor and black have anything to do with how little was done to help them?

It is worth noting that George Bush's new chief of Homeland Security was out launching September as National Preparedness Month. You couldn't make it up. --------------------
Sept 1 New Orleans mayor speaking on radio: I've spoken to them all from George Bush down. I keep hearing help is coming- this is BullShit man, I ask where’s the beef? We need Greyhound Buses form everywhere, they offer a few school buses. There's too much small thinking- I am saying this may the biggest catastrophe ever seen in a modern American city. Let me tell you there is one John Wayne character I trust a General Honore. He's the one gift the nation's top has sent us. I want him to have all the operating authority, then we could perhaps save some people.

How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive

"It is seldom, in the modern day, that one comes across a book with an impact like 'Collapse - how societies choose to fail or survive', by Jared Diamond (an Allen Lane imprint of Penguin books, 2005. HBK ISBN 0-713-99286-7; PBK ISBN 0-713-99862-8). Diamond combines the most rigorous research with a light and engaging writing style that turns this potentially weighty topic into an informative and delightful read. He charts the lessons of past societies such as those of the Easter, Pitcairn and Henderson Islands, the Maya, the Vikings in Greenland, and Papua New Guinea. He contrasts these with modern experiences in Montana (USA), Rwanda, Haiti, China, and Australia. Diamond then provides a compelling synthesis and puts forward practical suggestions as to what governments, corporations and individuals can do to learn from the past and thereby endeavour to secure the best possible future for our world. I thoroughly recommend this book as a thought-provoking read".

From web report of B Kirkman:issues that led to
the tragedy in New Orleans will become apparent:

    1. After 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency shifted from 75%
of its efforts being focused on natural disaster planning, preparation and drills to 75% being terrorism event reaction grants administration and terrorism event planning and preparation. Despite what one might think, there is little overlap between the two kinds of events. There has been a major departure of experienced FEMA managers with knowledge in natural disasters due to the focus on terrorism, and their replacement by terrorism experts.

    2. All across the US there is a terrible lack of coordination in issues related to flood control projects between the Federal, state and local government. There is also a lack of coordination between the construction of projects and their day-to-day operational management. In particular, in Louisiana is up to local officials to decide if volunteers will be recruited to stay in flood control stations when
major storms approach, at the risk of of the volunteers dying if the stations are destroyed. New Orleans did not ask for such volunteers.
Adjoining suburban areas did. The volunteers in adjoining areas were able to activate back-up generators and keep pumps working that
helped to avoid catastrophic flooding in the suburbs. In New Orleans the stations were unmanned. The power went out -> the pumps went off ...

    3. There had been proposals for over 20 years to build stronger flood control stations and barriers in the New Orleans area. It was not supported by short-term taxation logics.

    4. The evacuation plans were all designed on individuals and families driving their own cars out of New Orleans. No consideration was made
for the approximately 20% of the city that was dependent on public transportation. No one with knowledge of public transportation usage
was involved in designing the evacuation plan until it was very late.

In 2002, The New Orleans Times featured a 5-part award winning series written by John McQuaid & other journalists: Surging water is a huge threat to New Orleans. The Red Cross says that there will be a very high death toll if a levee breaks unless all citizens are evacuated in time- something more than likely if a category 4 hurricane hits New Orleans directly. Update CNN Sept 2 interview with McQuaid: the response we needed to this problem requires sustained attention and investment from every level of authority. Clearly that response was not achieved within the 3 years since this report.

BACKGROUND to Project 30000 - in exploring new acquaintances with people involved in hosting eith a very deep recociliation network for a humanity or a very hi-trust global one, I tend to explain the background of Project 30000 and then ask some questions. This is a live example (summer 2006) now that I have become very excited about the practice networks of Leaders Quests
    ______________

MAPPING MICRO * INTER * MACRO
In humanly valuable local projects we can discover how to inter-connect knowhow to other communities in urgent need, and what Macro crises of globalisation need systemic reconciliation to change the world.

1984 DEATH OF DISTANCE FUTURE HISTORY
Back in 1984 our economics, community networks, science and entrepreneurial editors wrote the first future history on global and local “death of distance”. This book time-lined how to track exponential consequences which compound around worldwide networks as the greatest communications revolution ever. In anticipating unprecedented responsibilities of the first global generation 1984-2024, we anticipated 2005-2015 would be sustainability’s most critical decade. However we are far behind the sustainability minimums we had anticipated, and the exponential downturns of specific faults in globalisation cannot now be over-communicated. Examples include:
Transparent worldwide availability of a Map of 30000 inter-local projects of greatest local development value
Clarification of crisis territories debated across broadcast scale media like the BBC - eg global warming; critical response networks to potential or actual disasters; ending poverty/terror systemised by global economics; reducing national expenditures on arms, ending corrupt systems and cross-cultural strife; new education and mentoring networks for children integrating advantages of collaboration (abundance), not just conditioning competition behaviours (scarcity)

    INTERPERSONAL MISSION
I try to understand who (people, networks, new economic investment modes) will collaboratively connect together maps of sustainability’s most vital projects http://project30000.blogspot.com For 14 years now I have given a lot of my marginal time to this both on the internet and attending open space meetings in many countries.

    SAMPLE OF QUESTIONS
    ____________

Is the mapmaking mission of people around me sufficiently relevant to you that we can work out what information to share over the crisis decade up to 2015?

Which projects have you come across that rank the most highly on all 3 dimensions : local need, interlocal transfer, need to intervene on macro policy of globalisation? Do you have particular foci – eg China as a region?, what as a human need priority?

What sorts of leads can I introduce you to? For example Bill Drayton (the lead protagonist of Bornstein’s Change the World bets-seller) has been linking Micro, Inter, Macro entrepreneurs since 1978, and in the USA is probably the most practically connected person to worldwide sustainability projects. These include 1500 entrepreneurs who each own a local project; web jams by themes such as health for all projects see www.changemakers.net; 6 people’s macro revolutions now on DVDs including Yunus (Grameen Microfinance), Eigen (Transparency International), Oded Grajew ( Social Forums converging on greater economic responsibility, and corporate benchmarking clusters) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3321985461393888643

Part of what I map sees the emergence of a triangle of recurring gamepieces:
Hubs are a physical location which is there for people of every culture to come and nominate project needs, form team experiments
Jams are worldwide webs that theme a project for all competition
Experiential Open Spaces and Quests etc are all the other bridges needed until people who have budget (particularly West Coast Billionaires) believe in putting human knowledge and service ahead of technology alone by openly connecting with local hubs and worldwide jams
    --does this make common sense?

I am trying to survey opinion leaders and so interconnect all “inconvenient truth” issues that may cause irreversible harm to sustainability if we do not reconcile them by 2015. For example, Al Gore is training 1000 people later this summer to present his inconvenient truth slides. How do we all make sure we know some whose collaboration network will be there?

How can we get broadcast media interested in all leadership challenges for sustainability of humanity? In particular, in Britain how can we free up the governors of the BBC and reform The Economist to be in line with its 1840s founder’s societal vision? How do we change which alumni networks and mentors teachers connect children with? Survey at http://er100.blogspot.com

Which networks do you partner with on longest issues and which are you looking for? How can “we extend the conversation” from any mutual questions we have of each other to hosts of (say) major humanitarian networks in London, Washington DC or other capital regions we have everyday presence in? A London-based example I am still trying to evaluate is Tomorrows Global Company (TGC). Originating out of the Royal Society of Arts -if it leveraged all its relationship permissions it could invite different global industry sectors to last call benchmarking groups for sustainability and reversing greatest global risks that each sector is most deeply connected with. TGC’s 2 main events of the last 12 months were Gore’s Inconvenient Truth & Annan’s Global Compact – both of whom have agendas for sustainability with deadlines 2015. Translating this back to global market power: for example, if we most of us can see we are running out of clean water, which industry sectors need to be got to the collaboration table so that water wars do not compound the way oil wars have, and how do we issue such meta-network invitations?

Do any of the above questions come first, or do they all criss-cross through each other? How do we minimise re-invention of the wheel of who’s experimenting with globally changing what and how? Quest sounds like a format that could be network-certified at all sorts of levels and arenas of leadership – how tightly or loosely do you want to see leadership quests become popular among ethical people all over the world?
